Gwamegi - Half-dried saury
Pohang Guryongpo Gwamegi festival
Gwamegi, originated from "Gwanmok" which means drying herring. The “Mok” of Gwanmok was pronounced "megi" in the Pohang dialect, and became “Gwanmegi” then the consonant “ㄴ” is missed and called Gwamegi. As the name suggests, gwamegi and Pohang are in the inseparable relation.
Among them, the winter of Guryongpo in Pohang is perfect for the best taste of gwamegi. This is because the cold, dry northwest wind that comes over Baekdudaegan makes the gwamegi chewy.
In winter, festivals are held in Guryongpo, called the origin of gwamegi. This year, the festival was canceled with Covid-19, but there will be events to experience various cultures such as folk play, national college student gwamegi cooking contest, along with free tasting events of local specialties such as gwamegi and squid.
